Yes, You Can Replace Your Windows in the Winter

Imagine this: it’s a clear evening in early December. The kids are in bed and you’ve just sat down in your favourite chair with a book for the evening. You’re all ready to get cozy by the fireplace when suddenly, you feel it – a cold draft coming in from the window. Since you can’t replace your windows in the winter, you’re doomed to 4 months of a cold breeze before you can do anything about it, right?

Wrong.

Contrary to popular belief, you can actually replace your windows in the winter. In fact, it might actually save you money and improve the quality of the installation!

Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Windows in the Winter

There are many reasons why you may want to replace your windows including a desire to update the look of a room, to increasing the energy efficiency of your home, and more. So if you’re considering replacing them but are on the fence, consider these signs:

  • There’s a draft coming in through the window
  • Outside noise is louder than it used to be
  • The windows leak
  • You can see condensation between the double panes

These are just some of the warning signs that your windows many no longer be functioning properly. Plus, many of these signs are more noticeable when temperatures are cooler. Unfortunately, people don’t often realize it’s possible to replace your windows in the winter and many usually wait until spring to do the work. So if you notice any of these signs around your home, it’s time to consider replacing your windows no matter what time of year it is!

Why It’s Better to Replace Your Windows in the Winter

Once you decide to go ahead with the window replacement project, you’ll quickly notice benefits to replacing your windows in the winter vs. the summer months. As winter is typically a slower season, many companies offer discounts and added incentives, saving you money upfront. You’re also more likely to get an appointment time that works best with your schedule.

Because of the cooler temperatures, your installer is more likely to notice (and fix) problem areas. Moisture is an indicator of leaks, but in the summer the dry wood frames don’t give the installer as much information, if any at all, about where exactly a leak may be coming from.

Finally, you’ll start noticing a return on your investment when you replace your windows in cooler temperatures. New windows are better insulated and cut out drafts which means your thermostat will be turned down. All in all, new windows will reduce energy costs while keeping your home warmer.

Thing to Consider When Replacing Your Windows in the Winter

Replacing your windows in the winter does require some extra thought to ensure the process runs smoothly.

If it has recently snowed, you’ll need to make sure the installers have clear access to the windows and the surrounding areas. Keep in mind that If it’s snowing on the day of the appointment, it may have to be rescheduled.

In general, we can install most windows in weather as cold as -20 degrees celsius. However, the colder it is, the more brittle vinyl becomes. Brittle vinyl may mean that bay or bow windows will need to be done at a later time, like in the spring or even summer months.Any windows with aluminum capping also requires precise work, which means the finishes are often not put on until the temperatures increase again. Don’t worry, we’ll schedule that in for you when the time is right.

Finally, remember to allow extra time for the installation. Windows are installed one at a time to reduce the heat from escaping your home. Consequently, the overall window installation process will take longer to complete than it does in the summer.
